UNCG uses WebEx for online classes, but did you know that WebEx can be used for online meetings by any student, faculty or staff? The WebEx Meeting Center tool can be used for many types of online collaboration including group work, one-on-one consulting sessions, office hours and much more. This and other WebEx collaboration tools are summarized in this article.
What is WebEx?
WebEx is an online collaboration suite, a set of video-conferencing tools that are geared toward various online collaboration needs, such as synchronous online learning, online meetings, and webinars.
WebEx offers different ways to use the product based on need:
- WebEx Training Center is available for faculty and staff to use for classes, meetings, office hours, or one-on-one consulting sessions online. With this technology, departments on campus can save money on travel, because meetings and events can be held online. Sessions can be recorded for later viewing.
- WebEx Meeting Center is available for students, faculty and staff to use for meetings, office hours, collaborative work (like group projects), or one-on-one consulting sessions online. These sessions also can be recorded for later viewing.
- WebEx Event Center is streamlined specifically for hosting large events like webinars. Event Center features the same familiar WebEx interface from other Centers, and contains some of the same features as Meeting Center and Training Center, such as chat, polling, and Q&A.
WebEx can be used within Canvas (UNCG’s Learning Management System) (using Training Center or Meeting Center) and sessions may be scheduled and accessed directly from a course.
The Cisco WebEx Meetings Mobile App allows you to participate in a live WebEx session on-the-go. The mobile experience includes viewing the Whiteboard and Application Sharing modes in a session, communication via chat and audio, and participation items such as raising hands, emoticons, and polling. The WebEx Meetings app is available on a variety of devices, including iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), Android (including Kindle Fire), and Windows Phone. An Apple Watch companion app is available for iPhone users.
